Using Graphs to Display Data Honestly (4-1)
There are two ways of preparing our data to present them to the world. The first is using numbers and the second is using pictures. The pictures – called graphs – include such things as bar graphs, histograms, stem and leaf diagrams, and the box plot. This lecture is an introduction to statistical graphing. You will learn about the fundamentals of graphing, many of which you may already know, but that will put us all on the same footing to begin learning about graphs. We will also learn about evaluating graphs, including the most important skill in graphing: display the data honestly. We will see an example of a graph that shows the impressive success of an abstinence only education program…until we correct the Y-axis. You will learn the guidelines for evaluating graphs according to Edward Tufte, from “the century’s best book on statistical graphics.” This video teaches the following concepts and techniques: Graphing fundamentals Displaying data honestly Evaluating graphs Link to a Google Drive folder with all of the files that I use in the videos including the Bear Handout and the Clickers.sav dataset.
