Sillage (2017) by Vincent David (b. 1974) Haven Kahn, soprano saxophone Performed live in Galvin Recital Hall at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music for my second Master's recital. Audio and video editing by Taimur Sullivan. Vincent David is a leader in a generation of saxophonists who strive to develop the musical and technical possibilities of the instrument. Having won three international awards during his studies, he is an accomplished and complete musician. He has contributed to the creation of many works for saxophone, such as Dialogue de l’ombre double by Pierre Boulez , Troisième round by Bruno Mantovani and Trame XIII by Martin Matalon. A composer and conductor, he has composed many pieces for his instrument, including Sillage for solo soprano saxophone, Pulse for solo alto saxophone, and numerous others. David is also a renowned performer and pedagogue, having given masterclasses throughout the world. He is currently the saxophone professor at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. Sillage is defined by Vincent David as the “wake trail left by a ship at the surface of the water.” He also leaves the following note about the piece: “This work is composed from a single melody. Developed by small waves, it leaves behind footprints in its wake which, in their turn, impose themselves in more energetic, poetic, or rhythmic ways.” Sillage begins placid, slowly building throughout the piece to its peak before returning back to the calm, mysterious music from the introduction.
