We introduce virtual temperature, a concept that allows us to account for the lower density of moist air compared to dry air. Even though adding water vapor doesn’t change the actual temperature, it does make the air behave as if it were warmer because water vapor is lighter than dry air. Virtual temperature provides a simple way to include this effect in thermodynamic and dynamical equations, especially when working with buoyancy, stability, and the equation of state. By the end of the lesson, you’ll understand why meteorologists replace temperature (T) with virtual temperature (Tv) in many calculations and why moist air rises more easily in the atmosphere. This video follows Chapter IV (“Water and Humidity”) of Fundamentals of Weather and Climate and is Lecture 15 in this series. 0:00 Densities of moist and dry air 2:17 Virtual temperature 3:51 Why does it matter? 7:16 Equation and example 10:45 Consider subscribing Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCimavWTT92eep-tiGg-cAuA/join Atmospheric science playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbgLMLcfdS87EbS0lL0U2zDhcuaEL3DlJ Wind energy playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbgLMLcfdS87hBG2S2RigjjKmMYJTfhS8 Wind engineering playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbgLMLcfdS86nH2k3Io-3koqD-uDr8r_7 Channel's mission: --------- The dissemination of knowledge and advancement of learning by providing high-quality content in the fields of atmospheric science, wind engineering, and wind energy. --------- Did you like this video?
