In this third and last lecture dedicated to scatterplots, we discuss the quality assessment of scatterplot-based representations. Scagnostics – an artificial combination of scatterplots and diagnostics relates to a family of measures to evaluate scatterplots in an objective measure. We demonstrate these concepts based on use cases where large datasets are analyzed. We also explain scatterplot-based representation for small screens, e.g., for smart phones. Finally, we show how animation can be used for showing temporal developments in scatterplots, i.e. how the relation between two variables changes over time.
