Exercise #1: The Gugs 1 3 5 8 8 8 8 5 3 1 Start On: E up to C, 21 total exercises * emphasize both Gs of every gug Exercise #2: Hum 1 3 1 3 1 5 1 - glissando Start On: E-flat down to D-flat, 15 total exercises End On: E up to G, 28 total exercises * let it resonate throughout your entire head, which you should visualize as a church dome * relax the tongue * imagine that you are yawning * when inhaling, expand around the belly, and don’t raise the shoulders * as you go higher, move the sound back, like you’re imitating a whale call Exercise #3: Golden Exercise lip buzz or V 1 2 3 4 5 4 3 2 1 1 5 1 - glissando 1 3 2 4 3 5 4 2 3 1 2 7 1 Start On: E-flat down to D-flat, 15 total exercises End On: E up to G, 28 total exercises * say the word prune Exercise #4: Tap Into the Mask Ng to Yeah, right; Seh to eh 5 1 - glissando Start On: E-flat down to D-flat, 15 total exercises End On: E up to G, 28 total exercises * don’t constrict the throat * use the Y to tap into the mask * try to stay open and relaxed, not closed and covered Exercise #5: Oral Resonance (sigh) (No way) (Naw way) ( 5 1 - glissando ) Start On: E-flat down to D-flat (15) End On: C up to G (28) * relax the tongue * think of it being like a sigh * tongue over teeth touching lower lip * let the tip of your tongue touching the lower lip * relax the jaw * as you go higher, change to just aw, and do vowel modification, changing from aw to ah * as you go even higher, add an H so that you’re singing Hah, think about your embouchure and about biting an apple Exercise #6: Head Voice (E, but really i) (1 3 2 7 1) Start On: E-flat down to B (5) End On: C up to B (12) * do it on EE but a narrow and dark EE, more like i (it) * keep it in the back of your throat Exercise #7: 20-Second Hoo Start On: middle C * fill the belly * keep the sound steadily supported, but with minimal air, like you’re holding a candle up to your mouth but you don’t want to blow out the candle * objective is to hold for as long as possible, for at least 20 seconds Thanks to Bill Artery and Amy Ackerman for showing me these exercises
