W3_L3.1: Facility location

Welcome to Week 3 Lecture 3 Part 1 of the course "Industry 4.0" by Prof. Rahul R Marathe. Full Course: https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/course_pages/BSMS4001.html Video Overview The lecture introduces the difference between facility layout which deals with internal arrangement and facility location which deals with choosing where a facility should be placed. Optimization of process layout is explained as a relative location problem such as locating one university department relative to another. Facility location decisions include determining where to place factories warehouses and retail stores. Examples include fmcg companies choosing factory locations and ecommerce companies deciding whether warehouses should be inside a city or in the suburbs. Non mathematical constraints such as social constraints privacy land availability flexibility expansion and aesthetics play major roles in real world decisions. The lecture then explains mathematical modeling for facility location using linear programming convex optimization mixed integer linear programming integer linear programming and mixed integer nonlinear programming. Facility location problems are often formulated as milp or ilp and may become minlp when including complex real world constraints.
