W3_L3.8: Facility location problem tutorial
Welcome to Week 3 Lecture 3 Part 8 of the course "Industry 4.0" by Prof. Rahul R Marathe. Full Course: https://study.iitm.ac.in/ds/course_pages/BSMS4001.html Video Overview This tutorial provides a practical demonstration of solving a facility location problem using python. A hypothetical case for abc company an electric vehicle manufacturer is used to decide where to build new assembly plants from four possible locations and how to assign six suppliers to these plants with the objective of minimizing total cost. The tutorial explains the cost structure including fixed costs for building facilities and variable shipping costs from suppliers. It then presents the mathematical modeling using decision variables an objective function and constraints ensuring at least one facility is built and each supplier is assigned. A step by step coding walkthrough in a jupyter notebook shows how to install and use pulp to formulate and solve the optimization problem. The results are analyzed for two scenarios finding the optimal solution when only one facility is built and comparing it to the solution when at least two facilities must be built. About IIT Madras' online Bachelor of Science programme IIT Madras offers four year BS programmes that aim to provide quality education to all irrespective of age educational background or location. The BS programme has multiple levels which provide flexibility to students to exit at any of these levels. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned the learner can receive a Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE (Centre for Outreach and Digital Education) Diploma(s) from IIT Madras or BSc BS Degrees from IIT Madras.
