This is the stage where beginners either stay ahead… or lose control. 📈 The Expansion Phase Last week this colony was steady. This week it is accelerating. Once brood reaches full frames like this: • Emergence boosts population fast • Expansion happens over days, not weeks • Swarm pressure starts building Colonies can double in strength very quickly once brood is capped and covered properly. 🍯 Stores Situation Good nectar coming in. Heavy outer frames. Feed being actively consumed. That tells us the colony is functioning well. But growth must be balanced with space. 🧱 Foundation and Checkerboarding Instead of adding a super immediately, I made one aggressive manipulation. A single frame of foundation directly into the centre. Yes, the bees dislike it. But it forces: • Wax production • Immediate drawing • Swarm suppression Foundation in the middle breaks brood congestion and buys time. ⬆ Super Or Not Yet? If you are unsure and it is past mid April: Add the super. Adding one week early causes minimal harm. Adding one week late can cost you half the colony. In this case, space plus central foundation gives another week safely. 🧠 The Key Lesson Growth catches beginners out. They see improvement but underestimate acceleration.
