What a Gluon Actually Does Inside a Proton
Hey guys! We’re now live on Spotify 🎧 Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/show/10Hdv6g1rbcEl5zWwgwjlC?si=XqKzZ5cGRE2yc0POyVSi0w What actually happens inside a proton? It's not three quarks sitting quietly - it's a violent storm of energy driven by particles called gluons. These massless force carriers hold quarks together through the strong force, interact with each other in ways no other particle does, and generate nearly all of the mass in your body. Less than one percent of a proton's mass comes from its quarks. The other ninety-nine percent comes from the energy of gluons. In this video, we explore what a gluon really is, why gluon self-interaction makes the strong force unlike anything else in physics, how massless particles create mass through pure energy, and why the gluon's role inside a proton is completely different from the pion's role between protons and neutrons. From deep inelastic scattering experiments at SLAC to lattice QCD supercomputer simulations, from asymptotic freedom to quark-gluon plasma, this is the full story of the most important particle you've probably never heard of - and why it's the reason anything in the universe has mass at all.
