As the curtain was falling on World War 2, Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical theatre adaptation of 'Liliom' by Ferenc Molnar named 'Carousel' premiered. The musical explored generational trauma, domestic violence and cyclical legacy just as it's predecessor had; but made fundamental changes that altered the overall message of Liliom. In this video, I explore the context of these changes and take a deep dive into why certain decisions were made; particularly in the ending where Billy is seemingly rewarded for his behaviour, quite unlike his counterpart. Does Carousel still have a place in 21st century theatre? Or does it spoil it's own clambake in trying to juggle too many elements coupled with messages meant for a post-war audience? You decide.
