What Do You Actually Get for FREE with GitLab?
GitLab has evolved way beyond a version control tool and positions itself as a complete platform. This pricing comparison reveals some big changes you need to know about. Key Differences We Cover: GitLab free tier limited to 5 users vs GitHub unlimited users The moment you add your sixth player in your team, you're paying - no middle ground 400 versus 2,000 minutes - significantly much lower on GitLab 10 gigabytes of storage versus 500 megabytes On premise version removes user limits but you worry about data backups, firewalls, hackers and patches GitLab issues available in free but extremely limited - basically just a ticketing based system Secret detection, portfolio management, and guest users with limited access What's Missing: GitLab doesn't look like you get project management compared to Jira. Time tracking and wiki based documentation available but doesn't look like they do issue to epic functionality. The Bottom Line: If you're a hobbyist trying to get started, try them all out. It depends where are you doing your software development - on prem or in the cloud? For hobbyists, cloud is probably more cost-effective with so many different tools out there. We'll do a series that compares all three platforms apples to apples. Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss the complete comparison!
