In this video, we explain torque limiters — sometimes called slip clutches or overload clutches, depending on the context. These power-transmission components excel in motor-driven machinery that requires some way to automatically release the driven load from the axis drive side during overloads and jams. As we’ll explore, torque limiters either completely disconnect or slip to enact that release. ⚙️ In the second half of this video, we do a deep dive on friction-disc torque limiters. These are one of three torque-limiter types we cover use slipping to dissipate power as heat. They use friction contact between twin mating discs to transmit power; overloads cause slipping between the discs.
