In this video, CCTV Camera Pros co-founder, Mike Haldas discusses the difference between DVR and NVR security camera recorders. This video will be especially helpful if you have an older CCTV DVR system that you are considering upgrading. Are you wondering if you should use your existing coax cable and BNC cameras or replace your old cable with CAT5 network cable so you can use the latest IP cameras with AI software? Watch this video. Mike explains that a traditional DVR security system is tailored for CCTV cameras, often called BNC or coax cameras. DVR camera systems are connected with a coaxial cable and powered by an external supply. These are a great fit if you already have legacy coax wiring in place, as they allow you to continue using your current cable infrastructure. Viewtron Hybrid DVRs, for example, provide flexibility to use both your old analog cameras and upgrade incrementally to the highest-resolution BNC cameras, or even add some IP cameras if needed (with an external POE switch). On the other hand, NVR systems are designed for the latest IP cameras and AI security cameras, by using network cables (Cat5e or Cat6) and communicating over an IP network. With a modern Viewtron NVR, installation is easy and efficient—just a single cable provides both power and connectivity to each camera, thanks to built-in POE (Power over Ethernet) ports. This enables highly accurate event detection, dramatically reducing false alarms that often occur from simple motion detection in legacy CCTV camera systems. For example, traditional CCTV DVR motion detection does not know the difference between a person intruding on your property and trees blowing in the wind. However, if you’ve invested heavily in coax cable infrastructure and can’t replace it right away, hybrid DVRs make it easy to transition, mixing old and new technology as your budget allows. For example, you can use your existing CCTV cameras and get the latest user interface and mobile apps by upgrading to a Viewtron hybrid DVR. And you can upgrade your cameras over time to the latest HD over coax cameras up to 4K resolution. https://www.cctvcamerapros.com/bnc-security-cameras-s/1478.htm For those needing advanced analytics or AI features, switching to an NVR and IP cameras is the way forward. You’ll get better accuracy, superior bandwidth for high-res footage, and a plug-and-play setup. Still have questions? Reach out to Mike directly at [email protected] for advice.
