Whelen Strobe Traffic Advisor Custom Setup

This video demonstrates a Whelen strobe traffic advisor comprised of six 64 series linear strobes and two 64 series halogen end lamps. This bar was produced in the short period when the 64 series strobe was offered with a liner tube but had not yet been renamed 6E or 600. The bar is powered by a Whelen UPS 690 from approximately the same period when the supply was offered with diagnostics but had not yet been renamed SPS 690. This supply uses 3 pattern wires and 3 switching control wires in conjunction with dip switches to allow the user to select multiple patterns and switching options. Powering all 3 pattern wires places the supply into traffic advisor (arrow) mode and reassigns the 3 control wires to Left, Right, Warning, and Center out (combo of left and right wires). I disliked the pattern that was used in warning mode (when traffic advisor was enabled) and was not satisfied with the end halogen flashers. I constructed a system that illuminates only the halogen lamp at the end of the bar towards which the arrow is signaling, acting like a cruise light. When the warning function is selected the supply drops out of traffic advisor mode and back into a full 6 lighthead alternating pattern while also returning the end lamps to flashers. This adds a "pilot" or "cruise" light during arrow mode to help with dwell time but also preserves (and enhances) the ability for the bar to fully function as a warning device.
