When Full Hip Extension is BAD!
A left AIC patterned individual SHOULD NOT be able to achieve full hip extension. Many people in a Left AIC pattern also have anterior left hip pathology: they have too much range of motion where they shouldn't. This is because their left femur is oriented externally in compensation for the the rightward oriented joint. In this position, when the leg is held straight during the test, there should be a limitation in hip extension due to the tautness of the ligaments. When someone in a left AIC pattern has full extension, and thus the anterior left hip ligaments are not structurally sound, it takes more effort to stabilize the left side of the body and it also may take some detective work to figure out why someone can't feel left sided muscles properly.
