When the Light Goes Out

A 4ZER04 original... the first time I heard Goth music, I was hooked. I'd been into Garage and Punk, followed by Metal, but for me, this was the moment I really felt at home. Although I listen to absolutely every genre, Goth still has its claws dug firmly into my tiny black heart. There's more than one story behind the lyrics. But in addition to the mix of emotions that I'm working through with the song itself, there's a kind of farewell happening for me in the video. After three years of living in Peru, I'm heading back to Australia, so in one sense, it's coloured specifically to mark that transition - but also giving the overall video a moody and bloody tone. The video also starts with a future-state crumbling cliffs of Lima, with Lovecraftian creatures roaming the ruined shores. It's a kind of parallel to the feeling of being wrenched out of a place I love, where I have made a huge number of deep friendships and connections... it ends up in an apparent happy ending in a field of flowers, but in the background are looming factories, smothering life...
