Which way will the spool roll? | Mechanics worked example

#Mechanics #Puzzle The classic rolling spool mechanics problem! Recently I asked the wonderful people that follow A Clever Chimp on Facebook a mechanics problem regarding pulling a spool's string from underneath it, horizontally away from the spool. We use the equations of motion to understand the problem to decide whether it rolls to the left, to the right or in neither direction. We answer the problem with it in mind that we want to make the spool roll without slipping. We don't want to cause it to slip or skid, that's a question for another video.
