Why Don't I?
I found a stone in the dust of the road A jagged little nothing with a heavy load It doesn’t have a heart, it doesn’t have a name But it sits in the dirt and it feels no shame I picked it up and I asked the sky "If this thing has a reason, then why don't I?" The wind didn't answer, the sun didn't care It just left me standing in the cold night air But if this little rock was made to stay Then God didn't throw me completely away Everything matters, or nothing is real From the stars in the black to the way that I feel Because if this pebble is just a mistake Then the whole damn world is about to break! TELL ME THE PURPOSE! TELL ME THE DESIGN! IF THE STONE HAS A PLACE THEN WHERE IS MINE? THE STARS ARE JUST LANTERNS IN A HOUSE FULL OF GHOSTS BUT THE SMALLEST OF THINGS ARE THE ONES WE NEED MOST! I’m walking the line where the dirt meets the sea Waiting for the silence to talk back to me I’m not a circus, I’m not a show I’m just a traveler with nowhere to go But I’ll hold onto this stone 'til my knuckles turn white A little bit of meaning in the middle of the night! Even the dust... Even the bone... Even the woman... Even the stone. Everything has a purpose...
