Why Your Attacks Fail
In this video, I analyse two attacking games played by the same student — and in both cases, the attack ultimately fails. What’s fascinating is that the positions were promising. The initiative was there. The king was vulnerable. The ingredients for a successful attack existed. So what went wrong? The problem wasn’t calculation. It wasn’t courage. It was mis-prioritisation. In attacking positions, club players often focus on the wrong things — chasing flashy moves, forcing ideas that aren’t ready, or committing to plans that don’t match the evaluation of the position. When your priorities are wrong, even a good position can collapse quickly. In this breakdown, I show: • How attacking players misjudge what matters most • Why certain “natural” attacking moves are actually strategic mistakes • How to correctly prioritise when you have the initiative • The key questions you must ask before launching an attack Attacking chess is not about random sacrifices or blind aggression. It’s about understanding what the position demands — and choosing ideas that align with that evaluation. If you’ve ever felt like your attacks “should have worked” but somehow didn’t, this video will likely explain why. Enjoy the lesson.
