Why Your Improvisation Isn’t Improving (Try This Instead)
Most players spend hours practicing… …but their improvisation doesn’t actually improve. That’s because they focus on collecting material, instead of learning how to organize and apply ideas. In this video, I take you inside my actual practice process and show you how I approach improvisation using a simple 4-chord loop. Instead of trying to play “everything at once,” I break it into 4 focused approaches: • Path 1 – rhythmic vocabulary and simple rhythmic ideas • Path 2 – outlining chords and focusing on shapes • Path 3 – adding chromatic approaches, passing tones, and tensions • Path 4 – combining everything into one musical solo This kind of conceptualized practice helps you: • develop clarity • build real vocabulary • improve fluency • and sound more musical Instead of hoping things show up in your playing, you train each element intentionally. ⸻ 🎷 Free Rhythm Training If rhythm is the missing piece in your playing, I put together a free training where I show you how to extract, internalize, and apply rhythm to your solos: 👉 https://www.tonealley.academy/rhythmtraining-youtube ⸻ 🎓 Want to go deeper?
