Will the World Really End in Fire?
The Bible does speak about the world ending in fire, but the context shows that this does not mean the literal destruction of the planet. Rather, it refers to the removal of the present ungodly world system and the establishment of God’s Kingdom on earth. 1. The “Fire” Represents Judgment The apostle Peter explains that the present heavens and earth are “reserved unto fire against the day of judgment” (2 Peter 3:7). The language is similar to the flood in Noah’s day, where the “world” perished (2 Peter 3:6), yet the earth itself remained. The fire therefore symbolizes divine judgment and purification, not annihilation of the globe. 2. The Earth Will Remain Scripture consistently teaches that the earth will continue: “The earth abideth for ever.” (Ecclesiastes 1:4) “He created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited.” (Isaiah 45:18) “The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.” (Psalm 37:29) These passages show that God’s purpose is for the earth to remain as the dwelling place of righteous people. 3. Fire as a Means of Purification Biblical “fire” often represents purging or refining (Malachi 3:2–3; Zechariah 13:9). Peter says this process will lead to “new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13). The phrase describes a renewed order of society under God’s rule, not a newly created planet. 4. The Result: God’s Kingdom on Earth When Christ returns, human governments will be replaced by God’s Kingdom (Daniel 2:44; Revelation 11:15). The “fire” therefore marks the end of the present corrupt age and the beginning of a righteous world. Summary The world will not end in the sense of the earth being burned up and destroyed. Instead, the Bible uses the imagery of fire to describe God’s judgment that removes wickedness and prepares the earth for a righteous age under Christ (2 Peter 3:7–13).
