Winter Tree Wrap - How and Why?

Hey Good People! Winter can be a harsh time for deciduous trees, especially those that are young or newly planted. One of the biggest threats they face is winter sun scald, which is a condition that occurs when the sun's rays heat up the trunk of the tree during the day, causing the bark to expand. At night, when the temperature drops, the bark contracts, which can lead to cracks and fissures in the trunk. These cracks can then allow pests and diseases to enter the tree, which can ultimately lead to its death. Another winter hazard for deciduous trees is cambium death. Cambium is the thin layer of cells just beneath the bark that is responsible for growth. When the cambium is damaged, the tree can no longer grow and eventually dies. Cambium death can be caused by a number of factors, including extreme temperatures, frost, and sun scald. To protect your deciduous trees from winter sun scald and cambium death, you can wrap them in Tree Wrap which is specially formulated to deflect winter sun. This will help to shield the trunk from the sun's rays and prevent it from overheating. On a side note: Something I did not address in the video is the fact that wrapping your young trees is regionally specific. If you live in a place that does not typically experience hard freezing temperatures, then it is not necessary to wrap your trees. Also, please remember to take the wrap OFF during the active growing season. As soon as nighttime temps are out of hard freeze, you SHOULD remove the wrap to prevent any girdling or inhibiting of growth.
