This is a hack I’ve been using for several winters, the length of heat tape you will need will depend on the size of your tank how insulated it is and how cold it’s going to be. I used a 9 ft long heat tape and a 40 gallon tank with 3 inches of insulation around it and it was a high of 20 with a low of 5 for about 3 days.
