Dr. Rodney Anderson from the department of urology at Stanford University School of Medicine was the principle investigator in a study that looked at cortisol levels in men with pelvic pain. Dr. Anderson is one of the developers of the Wise-Anderson Protocol for pelvic pain. The study published in 2007 was titled, Psychometric Profiles and Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis Function in Men With Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome - (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18207189). Purpose: Abnormal regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and diurnal cortisol rhythms are associated with several pain and chronic inflammation conditions. Chronic stress may have a role in the disorder of chronic prostatitis/ chronic pelvic pain syndrome… Results: Men with chronic pelvic pain syndrome had more perceived stress and anxiety than controls. Brief Symptom Index scores were significantly increased in all scales for chronic pelvic pain syndrome… Conclusions: Dysfunctional hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function reflected in augmented awakening cortisol responses. Observations suggest variables in biopsychosocial interaction that suggest opportunities for neurophysiological study of relationships of stress and chronic pelvic pain syndrome.
