In this pyrography wood burning tutorial episode, I will explain how to create a rounded border frame around your artwork. I like to put border frames along the the edges of the board to give the artwork a more polished or professional look. The frame I demonstrate is rounded, but that is just an illusion created by shading; something that I will show you how to do. Plus I will explain how to modify it. This video is a bit on the long side for such a simple subject, but I wanted to include a fair amount of real time video. I think this helps demonstrate how to create the smooth looking burn results. As always, I try to explain what I'm doing and provide tips to help you get the same results. For your convenience, I've provided the below list of tips to get smooth burn results. These are not in any particular order. • Take the time to properly prepare the board surface. Sand it, lightly mist it with water, let the board dry, and then sand it again. This creates a super ultrasmooth board. • Rotate the board so you are pulling the pen tip down towards yourself. This makes it easier to control the pressure on the pen, and produces more consistent results. • Slightly overlap your burn strokes. • Don’t use a really high heat. The higher the heat the harder it is to control the results. • Re-burn to build up the tonal depth and smoothness. • Always start the burn stroke on the edge or where the color is the darkest. • Never rest or pause the pen tip on the board at the end of the burn stroke. • Always lift the pen tip up and away from the board at the end of the stroke, so that the color to fades away to nothing. • Don’t try to get the burning done with just one layer of color. Re-burning is a major key to getting smooth results. • Use a light hand pressure. Let the pen tip glide over the wood. The light hand pressure helps keep the temperature of the pen tip constant, so you get more consistent results. On my website I have the written version of this tutorial, and here’s a link to that blog: https://wp.me/p8j0lZ-5Z6 I’ve broken down the tutorial into easy to navigate chapters: 00:00 Intro 00:34 Examples 01:37 Draw lines 02:16 Score lines 03:26 Burn lines 04:40 Highlight 05:09 Outer edge 07:56 Inner edge 10:03 Corners 11:19 Controlling roundness 12:16 Fixing mistakes 12:48 Variations 15:50 Board sides 17:07 Conclusion Website: https://www.PyrographyMadeEasy.com Etsy Page: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PyrographyMadeEasy Red Bubble: https://www.redbubble.com/people/pyrographyme Fine Arts America: https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/brenda-wilkie A new video comes out every Tuesday, so subscribe and click the bell to get notification. Wood: Basswood (this is also called linden, common linden, and common lime.) Time: approximately 8 hours. Basically I spent around 1 hour for each edge of the frame , or 2 hours per side of the board. Size: 16 x 16 inches (40.6 x 40.6 cm) Burner = Colwood Super Pro II Colwood website: https://woodburning.com Please be aware that I am not affiliated with Colwood. I just happen to use their brand of burner. Since I get numerous questions about where to buy one, I've included a link to their website.
