This video demonstrates one method of how to work in the round, using the example of 12 dc in the center ring and working out from there to Round 4. Both the adjustable ring and a joined length of chain stitches is shown.
Procedure used in this demo would be suitable for the beginnings of a hat (then work even for the sides), a rug (using chunky or bulky yarn), a round pillow cover and any number of other projects.
If you choose to use a different stitch for your beginning, note that the taller the stitch, the more stitches it is suggested be worked into the center ring. The standards are sc (6), hdc (8), dc (12), tr 18. I've also seen 24 used for the triple crochet. Another common start is 16dc for a yo-yo or double yo-yo.
