In this video Prof. Patterson introduces character encodings such as ASCII and UTF-8 as a basis for understanding problems that occur in the interpretation of text files. Although character encodings form the basis for XML files in particular, they are fundamental to all text representations on the Internet. International character support is the driving factor in different character encodings.
