Promotional film regarding the recently introduced XPT which was the highest performance train in Australia & the southern hemisphere at that time (designed & built in Granville, Sydney!). The design concept was based on the British HST (power cars either end, lightweight trailer cars, advanced bogie design) but was adapted to NSW track geometry & conditions.
The XPT is still in service to this day, however top speeds of 160 kph were throttled to 115 kph (in Sydney). In rural NSW the units may still operate at 160 kph, however the track condition is seldom suitable & the power units are showing their age.
Contrary to some reports, the XPT's are not being fully phased out, rather a program of refurbishments will extend their life even further, to supplement the incoming new Regional Rail Fleet.
