Welcome to the YouTube channel, Time Series for Data Science. Here's a question: Are you expected to produce forecasts and predict trends at work, but you didn't really learn anything useful in your time series course? Did you really understand it? More specifically: - Do you know how to do seasonal adjustment? Do you even know what it is? - What if your data are in messy shape. Do you have access to tools for wrangling and cleaning data? - How about web scraping data from internet sources? - Can you efficiently use R to analyze, forecast, etc time series data - Were you taught how to use the frequency domain as a key part of understanding and analyzing data, or was the frequency domain an afterthought or not covered at all? - Do you know how to assess whether an existing trend should be predicted to continue or whether caution should be used in forecasts? - Do you really understand AR models or are they just sort of a black box to you? - Do you know how to use tools that would help you decide whether to use a seasonal model and/or include a unit root in models? - Do you know how to use predictor variables to help forecast some variable such as sales? - Did you learn how to use neural network methods to forecast time series? WHAT? You don't know this stuff? It's important!! Then you NEED this channel and the book I’ll tell you about shortly. This channel contains 80+ instructional time series videos that address each of the questions above. One thing to note is that this channel is NOT your “time series in 15 minutes” channel, but it includes over 80 videos covering serious topics, often with the use of a light board. The videos are mostly done by Dr. Bivin Sadler and Dr. Stephen Robertson of the Department of Statistics and Data Science at SMU. • Both are award winning teachers • who have extensive experience teaching courses in time series (and other statistics/data science) courses in applied MS programs at SMU. Many students in these programs have gone on to • productive careers in statistics and data analysis • and many tell us that their time series training has been very useful. Dr’s Sadler and Robertson have teamed up with me to write a time series book that has been the culmination of years of teaching time series at SMU. I have • over 70 refereed publications, many in time series • and have co-authored 4 previous books, - one of which is on time series analysis. Our new book is Time Series Analysis for Data Science: Analysis and Forecasting. It’s the first time series book we’re aware of that directly targets Data Scientists and Data Science students. It’s also appropriate for: • Professional master’s programs in Applied Statistics • Upper-level undergraduate courses in Time Series analysis • MBA programs in Business Analytics. We wrote the book because it has been our experience that existing books for this audience tend to either be • “cookbooks” • or tend to get bogged down in mathematics. The book is written at a level accessible to students who have LITTLE OR NO CALCULUS, • but at the same time is in no way a “cookbook” of time series methods.  There’s lots of “meat” and discussion of the why and not just the how. The book also covers issues regarding • data handling, • data engineering • data wrangling, • cleaning, • dealing with missing data • and other practical issues OFTEN IGNORED IN SIMILAR BOOKS. We take a great deal of effort helping readers understand this field and to become efficient in the use of tools needed to address practical on-the-job time series applications. In short, we believe that this book uniquely fills a niche in the applied time series book market. Most of the videos in this channel • are accessible via QR codes within the book, • and were recorded by the authors to reinforce topics covered in the book. While these videos provide hands-on training in a wide variety of time series topics, clearly viewing the videos WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF MATERIAL IN THE BOOK provides a much better understanding of the topics. We hope you enjoy the channel, subscribe to the channel, and consider buying the book. It's a great resource book and it's very readable. #timeseriesfordatascience #instructionalvideos #trailer ----- Useful links: Website: https://timeseriesfordatascience.com Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Time-Data-Science-Forecasting-Statistical/dp/036753794X Blog: https://smu.app.box.com/s/gb4poerqj0mp4fwbe504rfskhad5mdqu Publisher site: https://www.routledge.com/Time-Series-for-Data-Science-Analysis-and-Forecasting/Woodward-Sadler-Robertson/p/book/9780367537944
