At the time of writing ‘Yesterday’, I was nearing the end of a relationship with someone I thought I’d be with for the rest of my life. It was starting to settle in that things had taken a turn and we wouldn’t be together for much longer. As I began writing music in this emotional state, I heard the sound of children playing from a distance through the cracked open window in my studio and broke into tears feeling an intense wave of nostalgia. I began thinking of the time I’ll never get back, not only in my relationship but in my childhood. As I cried, I also began to smile and feel grateful for the past. I realized it’s what shaped me into who I am, for better or worse, and it’s how I arrived at the present. I put my mic next to the open window, recorded the sound of the children playing, and put it in the song. The sound of children playing in the song represents childhood and evokes a mixed emotion of sadness and happiness. Writing this song helped me realize that your only option is to let go of what you can’t control, learn from the past, and move on.
