Vercel Labs just open-sourced Zero Native — an experimental Zig-based app shell that gives your web frontend a sub-megabyte native binary instead of bundling a whole browser. v0.1.9 shipped May 9, 2026. Apache-2.0, 2,900 stars in days, pre-release status. Despite the name, this is NOT React Native — the 'native' here means no-Electron, not mobile-first. macOS and Linux are solid today, Windows and mobile are in progress. This video walks through what Zero Native is, the Zig + WebView design, the trade-off between system WebView and bundled Chromium, the security model that treats the webview as untrusted by default, and where the framework sits in the broader Electron-alternative landscape.
