Debut full-length from Minneapolis hardcore band Zero. I remember hearing about Zero back in 2014 when their demo came out and that they were a US band that played "burning spirit" style hardcore. I'll admit that at first I was skeptical. Classic Japanese bands like Death Side or Judgement by nature are quite the challenge to imitate, and especially to do so authentically well. That said, after hearing Zero's two previous singles "Paradox" and "The Mirror", I was impressed. While I'm sure Zero's goal was not to entirely rip off burning spirit style bands, you would have to be deaf to not recognize the salute here. While all of the lyrics are in English, the vocalist certainly seems like he's trying to sound Japanese. They even got artwork done by Sugi, famous for doing the album art for several classic Japanese bands! First thing I'd like to acknowledge about Zero is the monster musicianship on this LP. Pummeling drums, melodic lead guitar, and frantically driving bass. The playing is ambitious to say the least. Also, this is probably the longest record I've uploaded so far. While for the most part, this record is ripping all the way through, there are many musical journeys that this record takes. The ups and downs give this LP an epic, triumphant feel. I think there are moments that are in danger of being over-the-top and corny as any band might be while trying to sound like Death Side or the like. Even so, I really feel like Zero is genuine in their execution and love for their influences on this LP.
