Zeroscillator Test
This video is definitely just for modular synth users, in particular for people who have or are interested in getting a Cyndustries Zeroscillator, meaning this is long and geeky with no entertainment value, folks! ;-) Enjoy! Addendum: There are 20 steps in the ZEROSCILLATOR TESTING PROCEDURE document version 2.2 from August 7th 2008 but I only roughly covered about half of them in this video. Since it's been over 5 years since i made the video my memories of what I did are pretty hazy but by watching they video and looking at the document I've put together a generalized index of what was going on. For what it's worth I hope it's at least a little bit helpful. 0:15 - 1. Listen to the Triangle Wave Output 2. Set BIAS, RANGE, and THRU-ZERO Switches into the upright position, and center the MORPHASE Switch. 3. Turn the big knob and listen for the pitch to change accordingly. Do the three-positions of the RANGE Switch work? 5. The BIAS Switch Up and Down settings should have an effect on lowering the pitch in two different increments 0:55 - 6. Listen to the difference between THRU-ZERO modulation and non-thru-zero modulation at different rates and levels. Plug sine output of a separate VCO into the LIN FM Input Jack and open-up the LIN FM Knob above it. RED and GREEN LEDs should be bouncing back & forth based on the speed of the separate VCO. 4:06 - 7. DYNAMIC LINEAR FM INPUTS & VCA. Patch one external audio VCO into the DYNAMIC AC Coupled Input Jack, patch a second VCO into the FM INDEX INPUT Jack and open up the FM INDEX knob full. The Zeroscillator pitch is now being modulated by ther Modulation VCO, while the Depth of that modulation is being controlled by your other Auxiliary VCO. 8:58 - 8. LINEAR FM SYNTHESIS. (labeled prematurely on screen!) Plug an external Envelope Generator into the FM INDEX Jack instead of the second external VCO. Then change the Audio rate INPUT SIGNAL from the DYNAMIC AC Input Jack to the DYNAMIC DC Input Jack instead. Patch the Input Signal back and forth between the Dynamic AC and DC Coupled Input Jacks to hear unique and subtle differences. 11:45 - 9. RING MODULATOR (Four Quadrant Multiplier). Unplug the Envelope Generator and plug the second VCO back into the FM INDEX Input jack and listen to the MOD OUT Jack instead of the Triangle Wave Output. 13:06 - 12. EXPONENTIAL MODULATION. Listening to the Triangle Wave Output plug an external audio rate VCO into the EXPO IN Jack and turn up the modulation knob. 13:37 - 13. PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) Listening to the PULSE output plug a slow to fast LFO Waveform into the PWM Input Jack and turn the PWM Knob back and forth. 14:20 - Sequenced patch 1: Zerocillator with pulse out and with both PWM and Linear modulation. Output passed through a Synth Tech MOTM-440 VCF and likely MOTM-800 EGs and MOTM-190 VCA were used along with a Moon Modular 569 sequencer. 16:11 - Sequenced patch 2: Variation on previous patch, I can't remember now what was changed.
