04. Line Segment vs Ray vs Line — Differences and Notation
In geometry, a straight path is described in three different ways depending on whether it has endpoints and how far it extends. Understanding the differences between a line, a ray, and a line segment is essential for correctly naming geometric figures, reading diagrams, and solving measurement problems. 1. Line Definition: A line is a straight, one-dimensional figure that extends infinitely in both directions. It has no beginning and no end. It has infinite length but zero width. Notation: By any two points on the line with a double arrow above them: AB with a double-headed arrow (written as ↔ above AB) In plain text: line AB or line ℓ (lowercase cursive letter) Example in plain text: Line AB passes through points A and B and continues forever in both directions. Real-life example: A laser beam in empty space (if uninterrupted), the horizon, a straight railway track extending far into the distance. 2. Ray Definition: A ray is a part of a line that has one endpoint and extends infinitely in one direction. It starts at the endpoint and goes on forever. Notation: The endpoint is always written first, followed by another point in the direction the ray travels, with a single arrow above: AB with a single arrow pointing right (→ above AB) In plain text: ray AB (where A is the endpoint, B is any point along the ray) Important: Ray AB (A→B) is different from ray BA (B→A) because the endpoint determines the starting point and direction. Real-life example: A flashlight beam starting from the bulb (endpoint) and shining infinitely into the dark, a sun ray starting from the sun, a laser pointer from its source. 3. Line Segment Definition: A line segment is a part of a line that has two distinct endpoints. It is finite in length and does not extend beyond its endpoints. Notation: By its two endpoints with a bar above them: AB with a horizontal bar (‾ above AB) In plain text: segment AB or AB with a bar (written as AB with an overline) Length notation: The length of segment AB is written as AB (without any bar) or sometimes |AB|. Real-life example: A pencil (from eraser tip to lead tip), a side of a ruler from 0 cm to 10 cm, a piece of string cut to a fixed length, the edge of a book.
