Students do not come to us as empty vessels, but with rich and diverse experiences and knowledge. Accessing prior knowledge (through a Warm-up, Do-Now, Anticipatory Set, or Bell Ringer, Accessing Relevant Knowledge or “ARK”) in a lesson plan refers to the process of activating and connecting students' existing knowledge and experiences to new concepts or skills being taught. According to Ferlazzo Sypnieski (2018), it involves both “eliciting from students what they already know and building initial knowledge that they need in order to access upcoming content”. This is most often done at the beginning of the lesson. This strategy not only helps establish routines and provide stability, but it enhances learning and retention of new material by retrieving previous knowledge and attaching the new learning to what students already know.
