12 Generations

New Song: “12 Generations” 🎸 My family’s roots go back over 400 years… across the ocean to Wales, and possibly Ireland… where the Gwin name comes from, meaning “blessed.” From there, our family made its way to America in the early 1600s, when this country was just getting started. One of our earliest ancestors, Colonel Hugh Gwynne, settled in Virginia. There’s an old family story that says he once saved a young girl from drowning in the Chesapeake Bay… and that girl was Pocahontas. The story goes that her father, Chief Powhatan, rewarded him with land that later became known as Gwynn’s Island. As time went on, our family grew and moved… from Virginia into the mountains… and into the fight for freedom during the Revolutionary War. Several of our ancestors served as soldiers, scouts, and leaders in the Virginia militia. After the war, they pushed west into Pennsylvania, chasing land, opportunity, and a better life. That’s how the Gwin family found its way to North Beaver Township and the Wampum area… where generation after generation stayed, worked, and built a life. Coal miners, truck drivers, electricians… men like my grandfather Charles “Chuck” Gwin, a WWII veteran and proud member of the Wampum American Legion… men who didn’t just talk about hard work… they lived it. From the early 1600s… to today… 12 generations later… that same bloodline, that same work ethic, and that same small-town pride still runs through this valley. And now… it lives on through the next generation.
