4v4 Transition Battles
Created via @SportSessionPlanner Organisation • Area: Two pitches, each 30x20 • 4 teams of 4 players • Each pitch hosts a 4v4 game • Goals at each end Format: • 4 x 3-minute games • Teams rotate after each round • Keep score across all rounds Objective In Possession: • Score by creating and exploiting space. Out of Possession (Key Theme): • React immediately to loss, regain quickly, and stop forward play. Practice: • Standard 4v4 game • Free play with minimal stoppages • Coach observes transition moments, not general play • Focus is not the attack. It’s what happens when possession is lost. Key Constraint (Non-Negotiable) If a team loses possession: ⇢ They must attempt to win the ball back within 5 seconds. If successful: ⇢ Play continues If not: ⇢ Opponent earns 1 point (or free attack) Progression 1: Pitch Reduction ⇢ Reduce area size slightly. Forces: • Faster reactions • Less time on the ball • More transition moments Progression 2: Directional Denial On losing possession: ⇢ Closest player must press immediately ⇢ Supporting players must block forward passing lanes If opponent plays forward within 3 seconds = bonus point. Now players must: • Close space • Protect central areas Progression 3: Counter Reward If a team regains possession and scores within 8 seconds: Goal counts double. This links: • Defensive transition → attacking intent Gamified Scoring • Win game = 3 points • Draw = 1 point • Bonus for regaining possession within 5 seconds • Bonus for scoring quickly after regaining Teaching the “Why” Read the Picture ⇢ What is the opponent’s first option? ⇢ Where is the danger immediately? Purpose in the Action ⇢ Are you reacting… or recovering with intent? First step must be forward, not backwards. Change the Rhythm ⇢ When do we press immediately? ⇢ When do we delay and protect space?
