The early church had challenges right from the start. The first challenge was a problem of distributing food equitably among the widows who had come to believe. There were two groups, Jewish widows and the Hellenists, Greeks who were either proselytes (those who believed Judaism and now Christianity were true but whose males had not been circumcised). The apostles determined that a problem existed but it was not their direct responsibility, so they raised up another group of men to do that work. It's important for the organization of the church, even today.
