Adaptation: Microevolution and Natural Selection The diversity of life is not a static catalog.
Species are not fixed types but populations of individuals whose heritable characteristics change across generations in response to environmental pressures.
That process of change—evolution by natural selection—is both the engine that generates biodiversity and the mechanism through which populations respond to the environmental disruptions that human activity is accelerating.
