In this video, I go over my custom 8-bit CPU constructed entirely from discrete TTL logic components on breadboards. The processor is capable of executing stored programs, performing arithmetic and logical operations, and supporting conditional branching. This series will examine the complete architecture of the system, including: - the shared bus architecture - registers and memory - the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) - clocking and timing - control logic and microcode - program execution The goal of the project is to demonstrate how a functional processor can be constructed from fundamental digital logic components while remaining understandable at the signal level. Future videos will examine each subsystem individually and trace the execution of real programs on the hardware. Hardware shown in this project includes components from the 74LS TTL logic family, EEPROM-based control logic, RAM/ROM modules, and discrete clocking circuitry. This project was inspired and draws from Ben Eater and James Bates. Go watch their videos as well!
