Here are the Basic Stances in Arnis When we say Stances, it is a Stationary fighting positions which one assumes prior to the execution of any offensive or defensive movement. "Courtesy Bow" - Among martial arts enthusiasts, bowing is a sign of courtesy Different Stances 1. Attention Stance - Stand at attention like a soldier in line formation, but relaxed, with the heels together, and the feet pointing at 45 degrees. The hands are in front of the thighs holding the stick at both ends. 2. Open Leg Stance - Similar with formal stance, but with legs about to shoulder-width apart or one foot or one ruler distance. 3. Straddle Stance - This is similar to the open leg stance, except that the feet are spread much wider (beyond shoulder-width distance), knees bent and the weight evenly distributed on both feet. Arms and hands in fighting stance position. 4. Forward stance - Move one foot forward until the knee and the toe are in line to each other. Distribute the weight or center of gravity to both legs. Forward stances can be right foot lead, which is the Right Foot Forward Stance or it can be left foot lead which is Left Foot Forward Stance. Forward Stance are commonly used with frontal striking or blocking techniques. 5. Backward stance - Move one foot backward 45 degrees away from the body. The heels of the foot should form an imaginary “L” shape while the legs are in a straddle position. Back stances can be right foot lead, which is the Right Foot Back Stance or it can be left foot lead which is Left Foot Back Stance. Back stances are used for blocking and backward evasion techniques. 6. Oblique stance - This is similar to the forward stance, except that instead of placing the front leg directly in front, it is placed obliquely or diagonally either right or left.
