There are three cases when we subtract a number from another one: 1) When value of the subtrahend (number which is being subtracted) is smaller: Step-1: Determine the 1’s complement of the negative number. Step-2: Add this to positive number. Step-3: Remove the carry and add it to the last bit of the result. This carry is called end-around-carry. 15 (01111) 01111 01100 (01101) is the result. -2 (00010) 11101 1 === ==== ===== 13 101100 01101 2) When value of subtrahend is larger: Step-1: Determine the 1’s complement of the negative number. Step-2: Add this to the positive number. Step-3: The answer is the 1’s complement of the result with a minus sign.
