Bridget O’Malley — or in Gaelic Bríd Óg Ní Mháille — is one of the most poignant laments in the Irish tradition - and one of my personal favorites. It tells the story of a young man mourning the loss of his beloved Bridget, who has chosen another suitor. The words are simple but devastating, conveying grief, longing, and the lingering beauty of a love that can never be fulfilled. This song is not a ballad of action or drama, but a lament: a genre of Irish song that gives voice to sorrow, weaving memory and emotion into music that endures. The origins of the piece lie in the Irish Gaelic tradition, where the title translates as “Young Bridget O’Malley.” Though passed down for generations orally, the song gained a new life in the 20th century when it was brought from Mayo into Donegal by a Gaelic teacher, helping ensure its survival. Since then, Bridget O’Malley has been adapted into English and performed by a wide range of singers, including Silly Wizard, Mick Hanly, Andy M. Stewart, and the incomparable June Tabor. Tabor’s 1990 performance at the WDR Folkfestival in Köln, with Mark Emerson and Giles Levin, remains one of the most powerful renditions. This version is set not only in the timeless landscapes of Irish song, but also in a remembered Ireland around 1910 — valleys, rivers, forests, and the mountain road to Drumslieve. A lament, yes, but also a song of haunting beauty that still speaks across centuries.
