Can Functional Patterns Help Me Run A Half Marathon?

In this video, I share my transformative journey from traditional gym workouts to embracing Functional Patterns, and how this shift has allowed me to train for a half marathon pain-free. When I first started personal training, the goal was to move people away from cardiovascular machines to functional fitness equipment. The fitness industry often overlooks safe exercise introductions, especially for beginners or those returning to fitness, leading to joint pain from activities like running on treadmills. Our gym's approach focused on keeping members safe, often by discouraging running. But I realized that running wasn't the problem; improper training was. Many new gym members would quit within three months due to a lack of proper induction and guidance, leading to ineffective workouts and no progress. At our gym, fitness professionals like me followed the ABC approach: Approach, Banter, and Coach. This method aimed to engage members, divert them from potentially harmful cardio routines, and introduce them to safer, confidence-building functional movements. Today, as a coach, I offer a 90-minute movement screening to assess clients and develop personalized, safe workout plans using Functional Patterns. This method has shown me that the body functions as a unit, and short-term fixes won’t address long-term issues. My journey with Functional Patterns has been life-changing. Initially, I aimed to exclusively focus on these patterns for five years. Three years in, I can comfortably run 15km without pain. Now, I’m excited to train for a half marathon over the next 12 weeks to test the efficacy of Functional Patterns further and raise awareness for brain tumour research.
