The principles of cartography and the principles of graphic design have a great deal of overlap, and graphic design techniques can bring data visualization and mapping to the next level. However, Adobe products such as Photoshop or Illustrator are often unavailable to GIS professionals. This technical workshop will demonstrate a series of techniques to “Photoshop in ArcGIS,” using Esri ArcGIS Pro software to achieve many of the same effects as Adobe Creative Suite. Topics covered will include layer blending, masking, and shadowing; creating glow and pop-out effects on feature layers; the “one-minute vignette” effect; color theory as it relates to desaturation, appropriate color schemes, breaks for data, and creating custom color schemes for organizational branding; uploading custom symbology; and finally how to achieve some of these same techniques using the new ArcGIS Online Map Viewer.
