Child-Centered Learning: Distinctive Features This video looks at some basic differences between child-centered and teacher-centered approaches. If children are playing a game or doing a project, it doesn't necessarily mean that the class is child centered. If children are sitting at rows of desks and doing more traditional exercises, it doesn't necessarily mean that the class is teacher centered. This video identifies some basic differences between child-centered and teacher-centered approaches that can be applied to all activities. This series of three videos looks at some basic psychological principles that underlie constructivist child-centered lessons and are important when motivating children to learn. When we are motivating kids to learn, we need to focus on teaching children through games, but just using games in the classroom for their own sake or pre-teaching new language targets before practicing them in a game is not enough. It is much more effective if learning and playing are fully integrated and the children discover new language targets while playing. I think this is one of the most important lesson from constructivism in education. In all the videos, I am exploring ideas for how to have a classroom learning environment where the children are exploring and discovering new language targets.
