Cold Emailing/Emailing Tips. As a student or researcher, sending emails is an important part of your academic and career journey. A good number of the opportunities you need, and the things you need to do to secure them, revolves around sending emails. In my experience as a Postgraduate Program Mentor, I have really come to realize that there are students and researchers who have what I call email sending phobias. These groups of people are so scared of sending emails. And if they ever manage to send one, a-no response from the receiver or a rejection email, would signal the end of their email sending endeavours. How do you know that you have a phobia for sending emails? 1️⃣ When you would rather lose an opportunity, than send a clarification email to a funding body. You are applying for a funding program and there are aspects in the application that are not clear. Instead of sending an email to the contact provided in the Call, you decide not to go ahead with the application. 2️⃣ When you would rather not press further to know ‘why’ after an application outcome. You applied for a program that the organizers clearly promised all participants, whether successful or not, that they will all be communicated on the outcome of the application. Weeks or months after the deadline has passed, you are yet to receive any feedback on the outcome of your application. Instead of writing to them to find out why, you choose to let it go. There's nothing to be afraid of when it comes to emailing. Go ahead and send that email. The person that will respond to you will respond. The one who is not willing to respond will not respond.
