Distinct vs Values in DAX
In this video, we dive deep into one of the most confusing topics in DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) — the difference between the VALUES and DISTINCT functions.
At first glance, both functions appear to do the same thing — return unique values from a column. However, when you introduce blank rows, relationships between tables, and filter context, their behavior changes in subtle but important ways.
Through a step-by-step example, you’ll learn:
✅ How VALUES and DISTINCT behave when blank rows exist in a table
✅ Why both functions sometimes give the same result — and when they don’t
✅ How DISTINCT ignores blanks generated by relationships, while VALUES includes them
✅ When to use VALUES and when to use DISTINCT in your DAX measures
By the end of this session, you’ll have a crystal-clear understanding of how these two functions work and how to use them correctly in Power BI and Excel Data Models.
