Does the version of Heaven you were taught actually sound… kind of exhausting? For many, "Paradise" was described as a never-ending church service—white robes, harps, and singing the same three songs for a trillion years. If you’ve been deconstructing your faith, you might have felt a secret sense of guilt because, deep down, that version of the afterlife felt more like a gilded cage than a reward. Some have even described it as a "spiritual lobotomy" where you have to lose your personality and your empathy just to be happy. In this video, we’re deconstructing the "Celestial Retirement Home." Using the real-world psychology of the Retirement Crisis and the 18th-century insights of Emanuel Swedenborg, we explore a version of heaven that isn't a passive reward, but a life of active, joyful purpose. Most importantly: we talk about why you don't have to wait until you die to experience it. In this episode, we discuss: * Why "eternal worship" sounds like a nightmare to many deconstructing Christians. * The Identity Disruption of retirement and how it mirrors the traditional view of heaven. * Swedenborg’s concept of "Use"—the idea that heaven is a community of collaborators, not an audience. * The difference between Toil and Use (and why love is the key). * How to access a "Heavenly State" right now, in your current life. 📍 Chapters: 0:00 The Problem with Traditional Heaven 1:15 The Retirement Analogy: Identity Disruption 3:10 Swedenborg's Vision: Heaven as "Use" 5:45 The Difference Between Toil and Use 7:20 Heaven Is Now: An Internal State 9:15 Conclusion: Finding Your Workshop 📚 References & Resources: The "Retirement Crisis" Study: The Effects of Retirement on Sense of Purpose in Life (Yemiscigil et al., Harvard Business School, 2021). If you could do one "use" or passion forever, what would it be? Let's talk about it in the comments. I’m David, and this is Our Third Place. We’re a community dedicated to the "reconstruction" side of faith—moving past the trauma and toward a spirituality that is calm, rational, and deeply purposeful.
