I use multiple dipoles to cover all directions. This shows a station Manitoba, Canada bearing 315 degrees from me and about 1400 miles distant. Although a dipole has a broad pattern off the broadside, if it is up a half wavelength or more it has a pronounced null off the end. This null is rather sharp. Moving 45 degrees off the broadside is not a big change but the next 45 degrees rapidly decreases the signal. One antenna is my North/South dipole. The station is 45 degrees off broadside. The other antenna is my Northeast/Southwest dipole. The station is off the end of that antenna. The third antenna is my East/West dipole and he is again about 45 degrees of broadside.
